When you watch the Paralympic Winter Games, one of the fastest, most physical, and most competitive events on the ice is Para Ice Hockey.

Known for its intense USA vs. Canada rivalry and gold medal matchups, this sport showcases elite athletes competing at the highest international level. But here’s the exciting part:

You don’t have to be a Paralympian to play.

Right here in Michigan, you can get on the ice through Metro Detroit Sled Hockey.

What Is Para Ice Hockey at the Paralympics?

Para Ice Hockey is the international name for the sport played at the Paralympic Games.

In everyday language:

  • In the United States, it’s called sled hockey

  • In Canada, it’s called sledge hockey

Different names — same fast, competitive sport.

How Is Para Ice Hockey Different from “Stand-Up” Hockey?

If you’re familiar with traditional hockey, you’ll be surprised by how much is the same.

What’s the Same:

  • Same size nets

  • Same size ice rink

  • Same number of players on the ice (6 per team, including goalie)

  • Same core rules

  • Same competitive intensity

What’s Different:

The sled is the key piece of equipment in Para Ice Hockey. Learn about each part and how it works in our “Sled 101” guide.

The Equipment

  • Players sit in a specially designed sled with skate blades underneath instead of wearing traditional skates.

  • Athletes use two sticks:

    • One end has a blade for passing and shooting.

    • The other end has metal picks used to propel across the ice.

The Teeing Rule

  • Sled hockey includes a specific “teeing” penalty, which addresses dangerous contact unique to the seated playing position.

Full Face Protection

  • Full cages are required in sled hockey due to increased facial injury risk from the lower playing position.

Period Length

  • Games consist of three 15-minute periods instead of 20-minute periods.

The result? A fast, physical, highly strategic version of hockey that demands strength, endurance, and skill.
